Step 4

Improving Safety and Quality of Care Through Interprofessional Collaboration

Step 4 is an advanced level IPE program whose purpose is to highlight the importance of quality through collaboration as well as the importance of safety measures and system design to avoid errors. Following a short lecture, a video screening will demonstrate potential consequences of not following security steps in a clinical case.  The case discussion will focus on the notions of blame, scapegoats, and system thinking to prevent error and improve patient safety.

Students Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain the magnitude of the patient safety crisis.
  2. Explain the difference between the person approach and the system approach to understanding medical errors.
  3. Identify actions that you, as a health professional, can take to improve patient safety.
