IPE 200: Introduction and Communication Tools

Core 1 is the first exposure to IPE for all students. Its main purpose is to introduce the notion of IPE and collaborative practice, present each profession’s roles and responsibilities, as well as basic interprofessional communication techniques that foster effective interactions among members of the health care team and promote quality and safety of patient care.

Student learning outcomes

  1. Identify key interprofessional historical events for interprofessional education and practice.
  2. Define intraprofessional and interprofessional education (IPE) and intra- and interprofessional collaborative care/practice (ICP).
  3. Identify the benefits and barriers of intra- and interprofessional education and practice.
  4. Explain own professional role and as part of an intra-professional team.
  5. Identify the scope of practice of each member of the healthcare team, similarities and differences within and across the health and other professions.
  6. Discuss the values and principles of members of intra-professional and interprofessional team members.
  7. Discuss psychological safety and its value in IPE and IPCC/P.
  8. Describe communication techniques to collaborate with other healthcare professionals and members of related disciplines in identifying and addressing the needs of patients and populations.
