IPE Core 1: Introduction and Communication Tools

Core 1 is the first exposure to IPE for all students. Its main purpose is to introduce the notion of IPE and collaborative practice, present each profession’s roles and responsibilities, as well as basic interprofessional communication techniques that foster effective interactions among members of the health care team and promote quality and safety of patient care.

Student learning outcomes

  1. Define interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative practice (CP).
  2. Distinguish the contribution of the various health and social care team members to patient/client care.
  3. Describe the influence of communication among health and social care team members on patient care outcomes.
  4. Apply 3 communication techniques to collaborate with other health and social care professionals in identifying and addressing the needs of a patient.
